National Waiters' Day 2018

May 21, 2018

On Wednesday 16th May, our teams from Boringdon Hall Hotel & Spa, Fistral Beach Hotel and The Esplanade Hotel took part in National Waiters Day, an annual campaign that celebrates the excellence, dedication, hard work and discipline of the 2.9 million people working in the UK hospitality industry.

On the day, activities, events and career fairs were happening throughout the UK with the centrepiece event taking place at Hyde Park, London. The South West was proudly represented in Cornwall with the impressive backdrop of Fistral Beach. A variety of hospitality inspired races and games were played, including egg throwing, tray spinning, cup stacking, mocktail and the omelette challenge with all money raised going towards the work of the Springboard Charity.

National Waiters’ Day is the brainchild of Fred Sirieix, a French Maître d'hôtel best known for appearing on Channel 4's First Dates. Sirieix grew up in Limoges, France and trained to work in front of house in a Michelin-starred restaurant in France before working at La Tante Claire in London. He is currently the general manager of Michelin-starred restaurant Galvin at Windows at the London Hilton.

Sirieix talks about why he joined the hospitality industry and loving his craft:

“I was never interested in following a classic school curriculum and decided to join a catering college instead at 16 years old. The thing that attracted me the most towards the hospitality industry was that it was very different and I felt I was going to do a special-something that most people could not do… and I did! I love the fact that I can travel, work late, meet so many different exciting people and work in an industry where I am able to give pleasure to others, be creative and most importantly be myself. It has always been my philosophy to work with the best and to do my best always (it does rub off). I believe in hard work and in the beauty of discipline to achieve one’s goal. There has never been a more exciting time to join the hospitality industry – there are opportunities everywhere for those who want them and those who are prepared to do what it takes. For me my job is not a job because I truly enjoy what I do and have tremendous fun and pleasure doing it".

Are you thinking about joining the industry? At Philema Hospitality Management, we are committed to delighting our guests with sensational service and look for team members that have a passion for service ensuring that our guests have the best experience at each of our hotels.
