International Women’s Day

Equality or Equity? This year International Women’s Day shine a light on why equal opportunities aren’t enough.

All hail the female form and what superheroes they are. Celebrated globally, this year on 8th March, the achievements made by women socially, politically, culturally and economically are highlighted for International Women’s Day.

Now supported by over a million people worldwide the event has occurred for well over a century and stems back to the first IWD gathering in 1911,

As a company, Philema Hospitality Management’s team over three hotels, two spas and skincare brand are made up of 64% females, are equal across the management team female to male, out of all female managers 70% have been promoted within and at director level the female outnumber 3 to 1. That’s a lot of #GirlBoss vibes right there.

Each year IWD focus on a different theme and for 2023 its #EmbraceEquity campaign, shining a light on the difference between Equality and Equity and the impact that such small changes can make to the day-to-day living of each individual. A campaign that drives worldwide understanding as to why Equal opportunities aren't enough.

‘Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.’ - internationalwomensday.com

Equity means creating an inclusive world and we support this way of thinking and living.

‘Equity can be defined as giving everyone what they need to be successful. In other words, it's not giving everyone the exact same thing. If we give everyone the exact same thing, expecting that will make people equal, it assumes that everyone started out in the same place - and this can be vastly inaccurate because everyone isn't the same.’ - internationalwomensday.com

Tailoring each staff members way of learning is an approach that it instilled in our core values as a company. Varying the tools needed, depending on the needs of that individual, is something that we pride ourselves on and continue to develop each day.
